La Muse Verte by Albert Maignan

Albert Pierre René Maignan, The Green Muse (La muse verte) 1895. The Green Fairy is the English translation of La Fee Verte, the affectionate French nickname given to the celebrated absinthe drink in the nineteenth century. The nickname stuck, and over a century later, "absinthe" and "Green Fairy" continue to be used interchangeably by devotees of the potent green alcohol. Absinthe earned other nicknames, too: poets and artists were inspired by the "Green Muse".

"Absinthe Blanqui" ~ Art Nouveau woman with the notorious drink of the day, Absinthe. Printed by L.Revon et Cie, however the artist’s signature reads Nover. ‘Nover’ is a palindrome of Revon, so it is widely assumed that Revon himself is the artist.

A preliminary sketch (or maquette) in ink, pastel and watercolour for one of the most famous of all absinthe posters, Absinthe Blanqui’s smiling redhead, printed sometime between 1898 and 1901. The printer was L.Revon et Cie, situated in Paris. The artist’s signature “Nover” is a mystery – no designer by that name is recorded. Since however the word is a palindrome of Revon, the assumption must be that the artist was Revon himself, or alternatively an anonymous employee of the firm.
