The legend narrates of an appearance of the Virgin to two shepherdesses and a gushing miracoulous spring that healed ill people throughout the 1500s. These events led to a deeply-rooted devotion of the Castiglionese people and to continuous improvement of the building till 1877.

"Il gran freddo di Gennaio, il maltempo di Febbraio." Literally translates to "Great cold in January, bad weather in February". The second month of the year was consacrated by Romans to Febris, goddess healing from malaria, therefore during the whole period there would be purification rituals representing the reawaken of nature from the long winter. In Val di Chiana this rituals were deeply rooted as agricultural traditions since Etruscan time; Catholic Church Saints gradually stood in for them.
