Reading Group Favorites

For reading group guides, discussion tips, and recommendations: We're also creating author-specific boards, like the ones we currently have for Jane Austen and Margaret Atwood. The pins will be chosen by staff at Vintage/Anchor who have worked with the author or book(s) in question for years. Whenever possible we will also have the author contribute pins. We mean for these boards to be useful and inspiring for reading group discussions.

A fearless, sexy re-telling of the Dracula story from Mina's point of view. Think Twilight for grown-ups.

So every year we award 20 stories the O. Henry Prize, which is the top short fiction prize. The 2012 edition is, as expected, amazing. Try it for a book club meeting. Why do you think these stories won? A Birth in the Woods by Kevin Wilson will give your group a LOT to talk about. Especially when you read his author's note about how he came to write it. Months after reading this story, we still can't get it out of our head. Coming in trade paperback April 17.

A gorgeously written novel with complex female characters who could be your friends/mother/sisters. This might be just the book to go with the blueberry lemonade with vodka that we pinned a few days ago...hmmm...

You know why Helen Simpson's stories rock? Because they are an improbable and totally addictive combination of can't-look-away-fluff and the smartest literary fiction. We only wish she could write her stories faster. If you've never read Helen Simpson, get ye to a bookstore. Try her new collection or an earlier favorite, GETTING A LIFE.
