Victorian Mourning

During a good part of the Victorian Era (1837-1901), Queen Victoria was mourning the death of her husband Prince Albert, who died of typhoid in 1861. From 1861 to her death 1901, forty years later, Queen Victoria mourned. Victoria and her entire court remained in full mourning for three years after Prince Albert's death. In the United States the American Civil War was waged with over 618,000 men deaths and many widows left behind mourning. Mourning became acceptable & fashionable
