Many 19th century photographs were made from glass and metal: Duaguerreotypes, ambrotypes and tintypes. Daguerreotypes were the first commercially viable photographic process from 1839 ~1860 & ambrotypes between 1854 ~1860 were originally housed in special cases, whereas the tintype produced between 1860 - early 1900s, can be found individually in cases, frames and paper envelopes with openings.
