VisitIerapetra (Official) - Feeling hungry? Try one of the most delicious and original Cretan dishes: “Hohli Boubouristoi” (Snails in the pan). It’s quite hard to say it and also a bit difficult to eat but if you start you won’t be able to stop easily as they taste absolutely fantastic. There are many snail recipes around but this one is probably the most preferred one by many. The snails are put in the pan with olive oil, flour, wine vinegar, and rosemary to cook. It’s an expensive dish for the few in France but you’ll be surprised as it’s so cheap here in Crete. Might look weird at first but don’t dismiss it until you try! Πεινάτε; Τότε ίσως ήρθε η ώρα να δοκιμάσετε τους περίφημους «Μπουμπουριστούς Χοχλιούς» (σαλιγκάρια) ! Είναι ένα εξαιρετικό πιάτο με χοχλιούς στο τηγάνι καλυμμένους με αλεύρι, ξύδι και αρωματισμένους με δενδρολίβανο. Στην Κρήτη φτιάχνουμε τους χοχλιούς με πολλούς τρόπους αλλά αυτός είναι ίσως ο πιο δημοφιλής. Μπορεί να σας φανεί παράξενο αν δεν έχετε δοκιμάσει ποτέ αλλά μην το αφήσετε να πάει χαμένο, σίγουρα αξίζει μια δοκιμή! VisitIerapetra (Official) - Have had lunch yet? How about an Omelet with Staka. Staka is a very Cretan delicacy and is gathered from the crust that the goat milk has on its surface, if you leave it to cool down, after it has been heated. After gathering it, you can use it in many recipes, one of which is with eggs, and sometimes potatoes, to make this tasty and fulfilling omelet. A truly original Cretan dish! Φάγατε μεσημεριανό ή ακόμη; Τι θα λέγατε για υπέροχη ομελέτα με στάκα! Η στάκα είναι βούτυρο που βγαίνει από την «τσίπα» (κρούστα) του βραστού γάλατος που κάνει στην επιφάνεια όταν το αφήσεις λίγη ώρα. Today we treat you with “Koubanakia”! This delicious pastry, can only be found in the Eastern #Crete and everywhere in Ierapetra, in pastry shops. Sometimes these are also called “Loukoumades”. Then you just have to taste Kalitsounia, one of the most famous treats in Crete and in Ierapetra in particular! A chef friend of mine once called them "Cretan Cheesecake" and I really liked this description. Its main ingredient is local "Mizithra" sweet cheese, and is scented with cinnamon and bitter orange leaves. In the summer you can put them in the fridge for a more refreshing taste. You can find them in any local pasty shop and each one makes them a little different, so it's interesting to try as many as possible until you find your favorite :) . Kalitsouni is an amazing sweet, don't miss it! Τα Kρητικά Kαλιτσούνια, και συγκεκριμένα τα Γεραπετρίτικα είναι από τα πιο γνωστά γλυκά της Κρήτης. Όταν δοκιμάσετε είναι εύκολο να καταλάβετε το λόγο! Το βασικό τους συστατικό είναι η ντόπια γλυκιά μυζήθρα ενώ αρωματίζονται με κανέλα και φύλλα νερατζιάς. Το καλοκαίρι είναι εξαιρετικά στο ψυγείο για μια πιο δροσερή γεύση. Μπορείτε να τα βρείτε σε όλα τα ζαχαροπλαστεία της περιοχής και αξίζει να δοκιμάσετε μερικά μέχρι να βρείτε το αγαπημένο σας, αφού κανείς δεν το κάνει ακριβώς το ίδιο. Μην τα χάσετε! This way, it is preserved as dry pieces and can be used for cooking all winter long. Its taste is quite interesting and could probably fall in the “love it” or “hate it” category of foods :) In any case, it sure worth a try!
