Today in Australian History - 1 May 1770Forby Sutherland was a member of the crew of the Endeavour during Captain Cook's voyage to New South Wales. He died while the ship was in Botany Bay, making him the first British subject to die in Australia and the first European to die in New South Wales. For more click photo and share please

The Forby Sutherland Memorial, located at Kurnell on the shores of Botany Bay. Sutherland was a seaman on the Endeavour during James Cook's first voyage 1769-1771 and died during the Endeavour's time in Botany Bay. He thus became the first British subject to be buried in Australia.
