13th century. Amuletic Brooch. English. gold, malachite, sapphire and semiprecious stones. Small praying hands serve as a delicate symbol of the faith represented by this brooch. One end is set with a sapphire, while the sides bear the inscription "Ave Maria " (Hail Mary).

One one side engraved with an inscription in simple Lombardic letters 'R.O.B.E.R.T.I LOVE YAG: LOVES ME' (Robert I love (you?). On the other side similarly engraved with the inscription 'IHESUS NAZARENUS REX IUD' (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews).
