2010s - Following the Arab Spring in Libya and Egypt, Sunni, Druze and Kurdish citizens are inspired to voice their dissatisfaction at the long rule of the Assad family. Assad’s response to Kurdish and Sunni protestors (as well as disaffected Shias) is violent. The country erupts into a civil war, creating a power vacuum. The current civil war is less about maintaining a Syrian republic and more about a redefinition of the Syrian identity completely. 1960s - The Arab Socialist Baathist Party orchestrate a largely Shia military uprising and depose Syrian president Nazim al-Kudsi. For a few years in the late 1960s, the transition is bumpy, though bloodless, as the country realigns itself to a strict, socialist paradigm. The new party spurs artistic and social movements as reactions—both positive and negative—to the Socialist uprising. 1990s - These years are marked by uncertainty as Hafez al-Assad ages. His son, Basil dies in a car crash in 1994, leaving the country to wonder who will take the place of aging Hafez. His next eldest son Rifaat takes over as president, but steps down after only a year, leaving the seat open for the largely unknown Bashar to come home from the UK at the death of his father in 2000. The 90s are the beginning of an epic slide toward destabilization. Hafez Al Assad, Syria, Dixon, Maryland, 1990s, Basil, Emily, Unknown

Most Syrians see the French as occupiers, a rift forms between those that see Syria as sovereign (the Sunni majority) and those that benefit from France’s presence (Alawite Shias). 1980s - Hafez Al Assad begins a period of ethnic cleansing, annihilating Sunni uprisings in Hama, an ancient town near Turkey and Cypress – the current site of tension between Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Israel who all claim ownership over the island. The massacre at Hama occurs after Sunnis associated with the conservative Muslim Brotherhood protest in defiance of a nationalist Syrian state, which is un-Islamic to the conservative majority. 2000s - Bashar al-Assad returns from studying ophthalmology with his Sunni wife, Asma. In the years Bashar al-Assad rules, his weak leadership allows for the resurgence of the Muslim Brotherhood, fueled by renewed anger at the fact of their repression by Assad’s father. Then-president George Bush and Tony Blair meet with Assad in 2001 to get his support fighting terrorism but Assad rejects their definition of terrorism and Bush adds Syria to the ‘Axis of Evil.’ Tony Blair, Axis, Weak, Studying, 2000s, Anger

1950s – the relative stability of Syria begins to implode as the ruling class, dominated by infighting, factionalism and nepotism, gives way to peaceful, but notable shifts in leadership. Two bloodless coup d’etats transpire between 1949 and 1954 in which one faction of majority rulers overthrew another. Trends are largely defined by the impulse toward continuity and, after one diplomat is deposed, the next one looks and acts much the same way. 1940s - The French exit Syria leaving the Alawites to fend for themselves. The ruling elite—factions of Sunnis—manage to instill a relatively stable, if unrepresentative, government. Tensions simmer as the ruling class largely marginalizes the Alawites for siding with France who, then, join the army in large numbers with other minorities for whom military service is the only career option. 1920s - After WWII, western countries of the world are looking toward destabilized areas in the Middle East, both for colonization and oil. France sees the minority Alawite sect of Shia Islam in Syria as possible allies and protect a prime piece of land along the Mediterranean. Other Syrians disapprove and skirmishes with the French in the region proliferate, led by Naziq al-Abid, who wears clothes and uniforms that purposefully allude to Syria’s traditional past and independent future.
