Embroidery: Middle Ages to Modern Day / From the mid 13th to mid 14th century, England was the centre of fine embroidery, known as 'Opus Anglicanum'. Since then it has evolved considerably both aesthetically and conceptually; it continues to feature prominently within liturgical vestments while also becoming a popular addition to many high fashion pieces, as can be seen in Valentino's highly acclaimed Resort 2016 collection. At Watts & Co our bespoke embroidery embraces modernism and adapts it to our traditional designs.

Royal Commissions / The coronation of the British monarch is a ceremony in which the monarch is formally invested with regalia and crowned at Westminster Abbey. Watts & Co provided the sumptuous ecclesiastical vestments for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902, and have continued to produce designs for every coronation to the present day. The copes for the coronation of Elizabeth II were especially striking, marking a bold transition towards embracing modernism and adapting its minimalism to traditional designs.

The Red Telephone Box

The Red Telephone Box / After winning a design competition sponsored by the Post Office in 1924, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (the third son of George Gilbert Scott, Jr.) became known for the iconic red telephone box. Scott sought inspiration for the design from Sir John Soane’s Mausoleum which had been built following the death of Soane's wife. The cast iron boxes first appeared on Britain's streets in 1926 and many of them can still be found throughout the UK today.
