For Native Americans long hair signifies great or strong spirit, and knowledge. The hair is considered an extension of ones thoughts. Hair would be cut only at times of mourning, a way of honoring their spirituality. Braid symbolizes oneness..*

The man sitting on the rocks was a Rebel soldier, and the man standing was a Union soldier. To think the civil war veterans were able to tell their stories/history first hand and that has survived for us now.

English Civil War: Battle of Marston Moor
Marston Moor, North Yorkshire: Echoes from the Civil War Battle of Marston Moor, which was fought on July 2, 1644, and in which 4,000 Royalists died, have been witnessed several times in the past century. Ghosts of soldiers have also been seen on Atterwith Lane and its junction with Marston Lane, and men and horses have been seen at the clump of trees opposite the Monument. The apparition of a young girl, possibly trampled to death by escaping cavalry, has also been seen near Wilstrop Wood, and no less a personage than Oliver Cromwell is said to haunt nearby Marston Hall, where Parliamentary officers were housed the night before the battle.
Oliver Cromwell was wounded in the Battle of Marston Moor, yet managed to rally his troops to defeat the forces of King Charles I.

John Arthur ("Jack") Johnson (March 31, 1878 – June 10, 1946), nicknamed the "Galveston Giant," was an American boxer. At the height of the Jim Crow era, Johnson became the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915). In a documentary about his life, Ken Burns notes, "for more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth." Samuel Pepys by John Harris (1666).
King Charles, Samuel Pepys, Samuel Pepi, 17Th Century, Book, Diaries, King James, Charles Ii, John Hayl
Samuel Pepys. Born: Fleet Street, City of London, 1633. With his exquisitely kept diaries, Pepys recorded in particular three major British historical events that he was present to witness: The Great Plague, The Great Fire and The Second Anglo-Dutch War. Samuel Pepys’ diaries have helped us understand 17th century London society more than any other historical source.
Samuel Pepys - Painting by John Hayls
Samuel Pepys -1668, December. "Didst visit the establishment of Mssrs Pennyweight & Bottler, having received book tokens from Mrs Pepys by way of a Christmas present. There met pretty, witty Nell Gwynne and didst retire to the Cock and Bottle where we did desport besides."
Samuel Pepys was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II.

The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) were the pioneering organizations of the civilian female pilots, employed to fly military aircraft under the direction of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The female pilots of the WASP ended up numbering 1,074, each freeing a male pilot for combat service and duties. They flew over 60 million miles in every type of military aircraft. The WASP was granted veteran status in 1977, and given the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009.
Elizabeth L. Gardner, WASP pilot, WWII. The Women's Airforce Service Pilots were a pioneering group of female volunteer pilots who ferried unarmed planes from factories and airbases in the US into war zones so male pilots could focus on combat flying. The main character of Duster would have been a WASP, if not for the death of her husband.
Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII -- Over 1000 experienced women pilots who served our country, ferrying new and damaged planes cross-country, freeing male pilots for combat; the WASP program ran from September 1942 thru December 1944. (Shown here: Elizabeth Gardner, class of 43-W-6)
