Shiso (or beefstake plant) is a common herb in Japanese cuisine. With its distinctive anise flavor, it is simply exquisite on top of cold noodles or pinched into a cup of chamomile tea. Traditionally, the fresh leaves were prized for their antispetic and preservative properties; they were often paired with raw fish and recommended for common colds and flus. Like most members of the mint family, this hardy annual establishes itself easily in any garden space.
