Lucy didn’t know what to wear to Prom 43. She had assumed the Proms were 'fancy' due to their location in the Royal Albert Hall, and was surprised when she was told they weren’t, so she decided to dress smart/casual, to suit any style of music. According to lucy, what the performers at the Proms wear should be up to them, and should depend on the music they are playing. She admits it would be weird for performers to be wearing shorts and flip flops! Coach Dinky Crossbody, Weird, Flip Flops, Performance, Shorts, How To Wear

Matthew always chooses his outfit based on the music he is going to listen to, and the venue he is visiting. For a pop music concert he would wear something more practical than he would to the Proms. He thinks that, overall, the music should speak louder than what the performers choose to wear on stage. Rosy thinks that it is important what performers wear on stage, and that it depends on the music as to what they should be wearing. Performers should always try to wear something interesting on stage to entertain the audience even more than the music does. Something Interesting, Audience, Evening, Fashion

Former music student, Dina, used to be very careful at choosing her outfit for concerts, when she studied music at university, always choosing something to suit the occasion and music. She no longer sees this as necessary. When she is attending a concert where Baroque is featured, she thinks the performers are more important, as it is her specialist subject, and always takes notice of their dress in this instance. Dina sees classical music as incredibly elitist, she thinks fashion would make a difference to this: something needs to change and maybe this could start with the fashion seen at classical music concerts on the performers, breaking away from the usual - she would love to see performers in something out of the ordinary. Richard thinks performers should do what they want to, and dress as they wish. He thinks that this area of the performance could be far more creative, they could express themselves through their fashion. Richard, Pantsuit, Express, Creative

Anna was wearing her ‘Albert Hall Outfit’, so she bases her outfit choice on venue, not the music. In her opinion, the musicians should perhaps wear black, as it is less distracting. It is also a formality and easier for them to choose their outfit. It would also mean that they looked like an ensemble. Of course she likes it when singers wear something glamourous and different! Jon joked that he was wearing his 'Saint-Saens' sweater, but in fact does not really consider what he is wearing to a concert unless he feels it is appropriate to wear a jacket or tie. To him, what the performers wear is not of any consequence, however he thinks that 'uniform prevents competition' so it may be easier if all performers wear something similar so that the audience are focussed on every one equally. As a musician, Thalia hates the restraints that are put on performers as to what they can wear on stage. She thinks they should wear what they want. Though, as an audience member, she doesn’t think it’s important what she wears to a classical music concert. Classical Music Concerts, Thalia, Put On, Things To Think About

Polly chooses her outfit based on the venue she is attending. She is definitely smarter than usual for the Royal Albert Hall. She expects performers to be presentable and says that stereotypically there is a correlation between classical music and rather uniform dress, such as orchestras all wearing black. Sarah, 20, always looks at the performers and what they are wearing. She notes that most performers 'dress safely' except for Opera singers in their fantastic costumes. However, she doesn't like to judge them on this, and likes to focus on the music. She thinks the Proms are quite smart, and she would dress even smarter for the Royal Opera House. At Prom 32, Justin, 23, really took the repertoire into account when choosing his outfit. As he calls Bernstein's Mass 'the people's mass', he thought it important to represent himself, as he did with his fabulous shoes! He would never wear something like shorts to the Royal Albert Hall, but also thought it was not necessary to wear 'Sunday Best' to such a young Prom.
