As many as 60 artists contributed illustrations to Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber’s Mammals illustrated (1774-1846), and accuracy varied depending on whether artists worked from observation or copied previous works. As do the majority of primate portraits in this work, this depiction of a male mandrill (Mandrillus sphinx) deviates from reality, though the flamboyant facial and rump coloration leave no doubt about the intended species. © AMNHD.
