CUDDLY SAILORS - Every now and then someone has an amazing business story. Such was the case while taking Daniel and Jennifer Williams of Louisville out sailing along the York River on a brilliant and warm afternoon. “I’ve got my own business,” Jennifer said. “We make stuffed animals of your pet. It started as an MBA project and took several years to develop. We’re now six years into the business. You can find it at cuddleclones.com. I have 15 employees in Louisville and 35 in China.

KIDS' SAIL - John Wilson of Virginia Beach took four of his five children sailing on the York River. Amid 15-20 mph winds under sunny skies, the sailboat tilted up to 20 degrees as we sped downriver. They had a blast.

OPENING DAY - Two couples from metro Richmond enjoyed opening day of the 2018 sailing season with a three-hour cruise in brisk winds and sunny skies. They alternated sitting up on the bow, where excitement meets romantic intimacy.

SAILING RESUMES - As the weather warms up, sailing season on the York River has resumed. We turn now to why people sail in the first place, including the romance of sailing. Nowhere else does a situation lend itself to such a sensitive setting that can melt the hardest heart. The romance of sailing is the romance of the sea, of solitude, of silence, of mystique.

BACK IN THE WATER - After a grueling winter, Let's Go Sail is back in the York River taking couples and families cruising every day.

SURPRISE - Kristen Yodis of Smithfield took her dad Ed sailing along the York River on his 61st birthday, and he was dazzled by the experience.

SCIENTIFIC SAIL - For those who are interested, I walk them through the dynamics of sailing. Brian Allan took his son Ben sailing Father’s Day so they could learn the fundamentals. I asked Brian if he ever heard of the Bernoulli Principle, which is how boats sail. Very casually and without irony or conceit, he replied, “I have a Ph.D. in fluid dynamics, so yes. I work at NASA.”

SAIL TOGETHER - Friends do lots of things together, but mostly they enjoy each other’s company. Nowhere is that more fun than on a boat where they can sail together. Visitors to Williamsburg find that sailing on the York River is a distinctly intimate experience, unique for riding an elegant boat in a wonderful environment of the great outdoors.
