Longhorn Beetle, French Guinea by Mark Moffett

Long horned beetle
Long-horned Beetle picture
The long-horned beetle has a face only a coleopterist could love. But the coolest thing about this South American beetle isn’t its horny face. Its body is strikingly beautiful, looking more like a remarkable piece of tribal art or wood carving than a living thing. Unfortunately the long-horned beetle may well be more threatened than threatening: It’s deemed “vulnerable” by the IUCN.

ladybug identification // Great Gardens Ideas //
These are a gardeners best friend. Here is a Ladybug ID chart. Over its lifetime, a ladybug may consume as many as 5,000 aphids. Almost all ladybugs feed on soft-bodied insects, and serve as beneficial predators of plant pests. Gardeners welcome ladybugs with open arms, knowing they will munch on the most prolific plant pests. Ladybugs love to eat scale insects, white flies, mites, and aphids. As larvae, ladybugs eat pests by the hundreds. A hungry ladybug adult can devour 50 aphids per day.

Bumble bee approaches a purple flower. I love bumblebees.
Bumblebees are social insects that are characterised by black and yellow body hairs, often in bands. However, some species have orange or red on their bodies, or may be entirely black. There are over 250 known species, existing primarily in the Northern Hemisphere although they also occur in South America. Like their relatives the honey bees, bumblebees feed on nectar and gather pollen to feed their young. Bumblebees are important pollinators of both crops and wildflowers.

campusbeefcake: clearly a lanternfly, these guys are awesome! they are true bugs, but their colors make them seem more like butterflies.
Phrictus quinqueparitus. A unique Hopper found in Costa Rica, these lantern flies, or lanthorn flies exhibit amazing shapes and colors. Researchers believed the elongated structures emitted light at night. This has NOT been confirmed through the last three centuries though. Either way the Fulgoridae family of insects is amazing!
Hopper :: Fulgoridae: Phrictus quinqueparitus (Costa Rica) By ggallice (THIS IS STILL A BUG!)
No bees = no food. Don't use pesticides in the yard or garden--they kill the necessary insects, too; not to mention putting poison into the food chain. See link for beekeeping info (retail, but a start).
