Sgt. William H. Carney won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Civil War on July 18, 1863 (the first Black soldier to receive the coveted award). He was a member of the 54th Massachusetts Colored infantry, was wounded twice during the charge on Fort Wagner, S.C. while rescuing the Union Flag.

Army Spc. Krystal M. Fitts, 26, of Houston, Texas. Died July 17, 2012, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Died in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, from injuries caused by indirect fire.

A paratrooper with Fort Bragg's Airborne Division was killed in action Tuesday in Afghanistan, the Army said Friday.

Navy CDR. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Died December 22, 2012, serving during Operation Enduring Freedom. Assigned to SEAL Team Four, an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Died in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan of a non-combat related injury while supporting stability operations. This incident is currently under investigation.

Marine Cpl. Sean P. Kelly  Died January 26, 2005 Serving During Operation Iraqi Freedom  23, of Gloucester, N.J.; assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Hawaii; killed Jan. 26 when the CH-53E helicopter in which he was riding crashed near Rutbah, Iraq.
