The artistic creations of Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) were matched by his equally astounding scientific breakthroughs. Da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” is his stunning correlation of the symmetry of the human body with the symmetry of the universe, and the material and spiritual realms. The work is also an intricate anatomical study containing 16 different poses. The iconic “Vitruvian Man” has been featured on album covers, in movies, and even in cartoons.

Andrew Wyeth’s most famous work and one of the great masterpieces of American art, “Christina’s World” is a haunting, nuanced rendering of the sweeping, uncluttered Maine landscape, as well as an homage to an indomitable spirit. Inspired by his polio-afflicted neighbor as she determinedly dragged herself toward her house, Wyeth created this painting and continued to paint Christina and her house in a series of works. Wyeth (1917-2009), a representational watercolorist, is known for meditative, neutral-toned works revealing the rustic beauty of rural America.

Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth ~ pinner wrote : I remember my aunt Jo had a print of this. She told me the story of this painting as a kid, that the girl was a paraplegic who had crawled too far from the house. It totally ruined it for me. I had my own story. When it comes to art, the artist's story about their art is B.S. The feeling you get when you look at their art is all that matters.

Three Musicians, c.1921 Art Print by Pablo Picasso Often disguising himself as a harlequin in his artworks, groundbreaking painter Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) is the central figure in “Three Musicians.” Flanked by figures that may represent two of his poet friends, as well as a dog, the work is rendered in the strikingly intricate jigsaw style of Synthetic Cubism that Picasso co-founded.

Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was a brilliant Austrian iconoclast who rose from childhood impoverishment to become an artist who enormously impacted the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau movement. Known for elaborate, explicitly sensual paintings and murals, Klimt’s works also encompass themes of regeneration, love and death. Embedding his work with images symbolizing the freedom of art from traditional Western culture, Klimt’s eclectic range of influences included Egyptian, Classical Greek, Byzantine and Medieval styles. A forerunner of Modernism and the Art Deco movements, Klimt’s huge creative influence still resonates in modern art, decorations and jewelry.

Gustav Klimt's "The Kiss" is characteristic of his work: erotically charged, dazzlingly embellished and rich in gleaming gold tones. "The Kiss," created in 1907-1908, is one of Klimt's most transcendent images. Only the faces and hands of this couple are visible; all the rest is great swirls of gold, as if to express the loss of self that lovers experience. Klimt, (1862-1918) an Austrian iconoclast, rose from childhood impoverishment to become an artist of enormous significance to the Viennese Secession and Art Nouveau movement styles.
