An image of We-Wa-a-Zuni, a Native American two spirit. Michael Bronski in the second episode of our Queer History podcast: "Before the Europeans even came here, we had many Native tribes and groups of people who exhibited behavior such as cross-dressing, same-sex relationships for both women and for men. Each of the tribes had their own language for this. When the Europeans came here, they used the French word berdache--which was a pejorative word essentially meaning a pedophile."

We'wha was a Zuni Native American from New Mexico. She was the most famous lhamana (Zuni term for two-spirit or homosexual in some tribes) and served as a crafter, spiritual mentor, and cultural ambassador for her people.

THE WAY OF THE TWO SPIRITED PEOPLE..Native American concepts of gender and sexual orientation By Sandra Laframboise and Michael Anhorn.....Our Elders tell us of people who were gifted among all beings because they carried two spirits, that of male and female. The two-spirited person is a native tradition that researchers have identified in some of the earliest discoveries of Native artifacts.

One of the most well-known two spirit in history is We-wha, an honored Zuni Pueblo cultural ambas- sador who traveled to Washington, D., in 1886 and shared the story and values of her people, who live in what is now western New Mexico.
