Lost (2001) by Gregory Maguire
I've not yet read this one, but after reading this it is absolutely on my list! “Winifred Rudge, a bemused writer struggling to get beyond the runaway success of her mass-market astrology book, travels to London to jump-start her new novel about a woman who is being haunted by the ghost of Jack the Ripper. Upon her arrival, she finds that her stepcousin and old friend John Comestor has disappeared, and a ghostly presence seems to have taken over his home. Is the spirit Winnie's great-great-grandfather, who, family legend claims, was Charles Dickens's childhood inspiration for Ebenezer Scrooge? Could it be the ghostly remains of Jack the Ripper? Or a phantasm derived from a more arcane and insidious origin? Winnie begins to investigate and finds herself the unwilling audience for a drama of specters and shades -- some from her family's peculiar history and some from her own unvanquished past. In the spirit of A. S. Byatt's Possession, with dark echoing overtones of A Christmas Carol, Lost presents a rich fictional world that will enrapture its readers.”
Gregory Maguire rocks.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is a novel by Gregory Maguire, retelling the tale of Cinderella through the eyes of one of her "ugly stepsisters." The story follows Iris, the plain younger daughter of Margarethe Fisher, as she takes care of her mentally-challenged older sister Ruth and her stepsister Clara
not as good as Wicked, but still worth reading
"A retelling of the classic fairy tale of Cinderella, told from the point of view of one of the ugly stepsisters, turns the entire legend around in a thoughtful look at what it means to be beautiful."
"Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister" by Gregory Maguire. I love the retold fairytales. There have been a number of books, now there's a TV show. I'm into it. And this is my FAVORITE. Told from the ugly stepsister's point of view, this spin on Cinderella is AWESOME. And, yes, I am objective; I don't like all his novels just because. I didn't like "Mirror Mirror".

Mirror Mirror: A Novel: Gregory Maguire. What a wonderful take on Sleeping Beauty with Lucrecia Borgia as the Evil Queen! Another brilliant reimagining of classic fairy tales.
