American House Styles

The Gothic Revival is another trend that started in England and made its way to the U.S. The style mimics the shapes found on Medieval churches and houses, and is almost always found in rural areas. 1840-1880.

American House Styles

The Gothic Revival was the first and most important of the many house fashions to sweep Victorian America, starting in about 1840.  This style harked back to medieval castles and cathedrals, and its growth in popularity came simultaneously with romantic movements in all the arts — that is, simultaneously with the infamous Victorian taste for melodramatic music, plays, and novels.

Kildare Mansion in Huntsville, Alabama is the wonderful mansion and estate built in 1886 for Michael J. O'Shaughnessy. He was a wealthy and ambitious northerner who came south after the Civil War and continued to build his fortune. When construction of "Kildare" was complete, O'Shaughnessy had his prize-winning foxhounds and horses brought in so that he could enjoy the sports of chase as a way of unwinding.
