In most countries, if a person with Alzheimer's or dementia can no longer eat on their own without choking due to difficulty swallowing, tube feeding is not recommended... and hosipice is called in. But for the same condition in stroke and ALS, patients are placed on tube feeding. Why such different in practice? My mom have been on tube feeding since June 2021 and it improved her life. Recently I got static shock (mild electricity jolt) when I attempt to touch my mother whom I am caring for. The static got more frequent and greater intensity. Doctors in hospitals in Thailand would place a patient on tube feeding once they cannot swallow be it due to stroke, motor neuron or Alzeimer's/dementia and they provide support and teach caregivers. From experience, I do NOT find it is prolonging suffering. I placed my mom who have end stage Alzheimer's on tube feeding since June 2021. In 2017, I resigned at the peak of my career to become a full time caregiver for my mother, who was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. She was yellow with jaundice all over. Her ankles and abdomen swelled with ascites (bloating). Was told she had about 3 months to live based on her outer appearance. So I left my job to care for her full time and she got better. More than 20 years ago, my mom underwent 36 doses of radiation treatment for her tonsil cancer. The radiation produces a lot of side effects, many of them long term. My mom had glaucoma on her left eye which by the time it was diagnosed in 2007 was quite severe. In mind body connection, glaucoma is linked to unshed tears. Meaning tears that are supposed to come out due to sadness and disappointment but were being suppressed. So gradual build up of pressure leads to illness like glaucoma. Yes, there is a danger of choking, injury and aspiration. I would briefly go through the three as part of the FAQ series- please visit the link to view more. Even though there are possible risks, it is lifesaving for those who are unable to manage their secretions either by swallowing to the stomach or spitting out. What I am about to share would relate to tube feeding due to dysphagia, ie losing the ability to swallow like in ALS or stroke. With dysphagia, there comes phlegm problem and surceptibility of recurring lung infections/ pneunomia. Read on how the 18 months have been for us. I have linked a video in Thai that showed phlegm suction is really performed on a young girl. The girl had a lot of phlegm and mucus in her nose and throat. No doubt, it may seem cruel to see the child stuggling but without suction, the excessive mucus and secretion that accumulate can cause pneunomia, breathing difficulties.... and when it hardens it can become a choking hazard.
