This is the world's largest freestanding building, an airship hangar built a decade ago at an abandoned Soviet military base south of Berlin. It has since become of all things, a water park...
This supermassive airship hangar(1,181 feet long x 688 feet wide x 351 feet high, big enough to hold 14 Boeing 747s) built a decade ago at an abandoned Soviet military base south of Berlin. Now it has been given a second life as an tropical islands resort that holds the world’s largest indoor pool and water park. #Germany

The cathedral in the Spanish city of Salamanca was constructed in 1102, and is therefore one of the oldest such constructions in the world. It features magnificent stone carvings on all its walls, but one of them is a bit more special than the others. It bears the depiction of what appears to be a fully dressed astronaut in a space suit, complete with details such as the sole of his shoes. Nobody knows how he got there, or what a 20th century astronaut is doing on the walls of a 12th c. church.

The cathedral in Salamanca (Spain) was constructed in 1102 and is therefore one of the oldest such constructions in the world. It bears the depiction of what appears to be a fully dressed astronaut in a space suit complete with details such as the sole of his shoes. Unfortunately for Chariot buffs, however, the origins of the carving are neither ancient nor mysterious. The astronaut figure dates not from the 12th century or the 16th century or even the 18th century, but from 1992, and we know both who put it there and why: The New Cathedral was undergoing restoration work during that period, and one of the artisans engaged in the project chose to engage in a bit of tradition by "signing" his work with a contemporary symbol representative of the 20th century: an astronaut. Ride the Tour de France High Passes. 'Tourmalet remains one of the classic Tour ascents, drawing hordes of cycling pilgrims, as does Col du Galibier, the first Alpine climb introduced into the race (in 1911). Prime among the other famed climbs are the Alpe d’Huez (first raced in 1952) and Mont Ventoux (1951), rising mighty above the Rhône valley. All four passes have been ranked hors categorie, meaning they’re so steep as to be beyond classification.' http://www.lonelyplanet.com/france

http://armorbear.com/most-dangerous-cities-in-america-based-on-analysis-of-fbi-statisitcs/ For cities with perpetually high crime rates, 2011 was an especially bad year. An analysis of FBI crime statistics by 24/7 Wall Street reveals that in many of the most dangerous cities in America, such as St. Louis and Memphis, violent crime actually went up. That goes against a national trend of lower crime rates compared to 2010......Read More
